The Mark III / Master System Out Run does really well given that it came out in 1987; it remained the only console version available for close to 3 years. Out Run was converted onto every single computer format between 1987 and 1990 - usually without much success. Pony Canyon's MSX2 version is no exception: it's a drab, jerky and uninspiring effort, with little to no interest besides its value as a collectible. Large plastic case, 2Mbit cartridge, booklet.

It took a while for an even vaguely accurate home version of Out Run to appear, and it was NEC Avenue's excellent PC Engine version that did the honours first. Fast and smooth, stylish and slick - a job well done. Standard PCE case, 4Mbit HuCard, colour manual.

Sega eventually delivered a Mega Drive Out Run in August 1991, releasing it simultaneously with a Game Gear version. It's a perfectly decent port, but it was all too little too late. This would have made more of an impression back in 1989, ideally as a launch title. Features an all-new music track, 'Step On Beat'. Standard MD case, 8Mbit cartridge, colour manual.

Entertaining but rather uneventful 3D update of the original Out Run for the Sega Ages 2500 series. Like most early games of the series it's not too bad if you're a fan of the original - it features slick 3D visuals, new stages, a remixed soundtrack, no Ferrari, and no steering wheel compatibility.
